- 1) Introduction
-
- Spelling Helper For Windows is fun and challenging for kids to use to learn their
- spelling words. It is perfect for a teacher to use in the classroom or for
- a parent to use at home to drill their children on their spelling words.
-
- The Spelling helper uses a tried and proven method of teaching children how to
- spell. It takes a word, subtracts letters from it, and finally asks the child to
- type the complete word from memory. This version, however, does not allow the
- user to save a spelling list. He or she must type in the list each time the
- program is run. This is not all that time consuming, but it can be tedious.
-
- This brings me to my next point. Spelling Helper is shareware. That is to
- say, it's not free. Shareware is a means of marketing software for those of
- us who don't have a crack marketing department with a huge budget.
-
- The basic premise is that you get to try out the software before you buy it.
- Once you've tried the product, and decided it is worth the cost, you send
- in your registration fee and will receive the latest, greatest version of
- the software. This process is known as Shareware Registration.
-
- In this case the latest and greatest version has some of the annoying aspects
- of the shareware version taken out. Such as, you can save and load spelling
- lists. You can type in a new spelling list on Monday, save it, and then load
- the file each time you want to use it. That is unlike the shareware version which
- makes you type in the words each time you run the program. The real version also
- loads **much** faster than the shareware version. Another advantage to registering
- is that it gets rid of the nag screen, and you get the next version of this
- program free of cost.
-
- The registration price is $11 in the USA ($10 for the program, and $1 for
- shipping and future contact costs. The perfered method of ordering is for you
- to use CompuServe's Software Registration forum (GO SWREG) and use SWREG ID# 10454.
- If you are unable to use that method, you can send a check or money order for
- $11 through the mail to the address listed below. If you use this method, then
- also include a card with your full name, address, phone number, and email address
- as all are required to complete the registration procedure.
-
-
-
- 2) Installation
-
- Aside from the ZIP file SPELL.ZIP you will need one other file to
- successfully install and run Spelling Helper. You will need:
-
- VBRUN200.DLL
-
- VBRUN200.DLL is the run-time module needed to run all programs written in
- the language Visual Basic. VBRUN200.DLL can be found on all on-line
- services including CompuServe. You probably already have this file. Once you
- have VBRUN200.DLL uncompress it, and put this file in your C:\WINDOWS\SYSTEM
- directory. It can also be put in the directory with the program, but placing
- it in the Windows directory gives other programs access to the file too.
-
- Installation couldn't be easier. Simply create a new directory and put all
- the files from SPELL.ZIP into the directory. If you want to add the file to
- a Windows Program Manager program group, simply drag the file from Windows file
- manager to the program group where you wish for the file to reside.
-
-
- 3) File Descriptions
-
- You should find the following files in SPELL.ZIP
-
- SPELLER.EXE - The executable Spelling Helper program
- README.TXT - This readme file
- CMDIALOG.VBX - A Custom Control file required for the program to run
